NHT089: ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN – Ocean Rain

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Music lovers would know that many successful bands have similar back stories.

It all starts with real sacrifice, where everything is given to the music and nothing else matters.

For those lucky few that gain success, it must feel extremely deserving but at the same time very heady and difficult to manage. Many bands do not make it through that transition.

I wonder if that was the case with ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN who within a few short years of starting were able to employ a full orchestra to accompany them on their recordings.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT088: RADIOHEAD – Climbing Up The Walls

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

It would have been a very bold person to proclaim that RADIOHEAD were to become the band they are today after hearing their 1993 single Creep.

That is nothing against the song, it was very successful but also certainly of its time, stemming from a blend of grunge and slacker rock.

Its almost as if they exorcised that out of their collective blood right up front.

From that point onwards they appear to have been on a journey of musical discovery, never afraid to try something different.

Although they may not have hit the same spot on the musical charts as they did with Creep, they have become a band referred to in reverential terms by fans and fellow musicians alike.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT087: THE SUGARCUBES – Water

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Icelands THE SUGARCUBES, like the country itself, were certainly unique and intriguing.

Fronted by the mysterious Bjork, they took the alternative music world by storm with their debut single Birthday and accompanying album.

They were only with us for a short while, releasing just three albums but they did themselves and their country proud.

Altogether different to what we traditionally term as world music, THE SUGARCUBES did make the music world stand up and notice that incredible music could come from anywhere.

A superb achievement and many a band owe them a debt of gratitude.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT086: FAR OUT CORPORATION – Don’t Blame The Beam

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

I can imagine that there is a certain amount of rivalry that occurs between bands from the same era, particularly between those that also come from the same location.

Maybe we the audience are beneficiaries of that competition as it pushes those bands further into creativity as they try to outdo each other.

And then there are those occasions that ultimately sees members from these bands come together.

Like the FAR OUT CORPORATION, essentially an Australian alternative music supergroup from the late 90s. They were only with us for a short time, but it was a happy time for the music listener.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT085: THE FIXX – One Look Up

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

In the early 80s UK band THE FIXX had a surprise hit in the US with their song One Thing Leads To Another which was the lead single from their second album.

Then all of a sudden, songs from their debut album started to chart well.

And from there, their next singles and albums charted well too.

This began with support from College radio, then broke through to the mainstream.

Quite impressive stuff from a band that very much had their own unique style. They are still able to tour around the world to a gracious audience even now.

Have a listen and see what you think.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke
