NHT108: AIR – Alone In Kyoto

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

When French duo AIR released their debut album Moon Safari in 1998, it is as though the world was waiting for their particular take on ambient electronica.

The album and the three singles lifted from it were all massively successful and a long, prosperous and respected musical career was to be theirs.

They also formed a special relationship with Academy Award winning director, producer and screen-writer Sophia Coppola, writing the soundtrack or contributing songs to a number of her films.

Todays track is from one of those movies, 2003’s Lost in Translation.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT107: SHELLEYAN ORPHAN – Timeblind

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

When I first heard UK band SHELLEYAN ORPHAN and their 1989 single Shatter, I was thoroughly impressed.

They struck me as a highly musical band that was augmented by complex and emotive vocal melodies.

In a way, they seemed to me to be a modern-day representation of baroque period England. Unique. Fascinating!

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT106: SKY – Carillon

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

UK-Australian unit SKY was a bit of an anomaly when they launched themselves onto the world in late 1970’s.

Here was a group consisting of members from the crème dela crème of the musical world. Essentially all virtuoso’s on their instruments, joining together to present their own take on pop music.

As a result, they did receive a fair degree of criticism simultaneously from classical musical purists as well as the street-cred crowd.

However, at the same time they attracted a mass of fans from far and wide. It is arguable if we will ever see the likes of a band like SKY again.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT105: JEFF BUCKLEY – All Flowers Bend

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

In the mid 90s US musician JEFF BUCKLEY seemingly came from nowhere to take the world by storm.

His debut album Grace was hailed as a masterpiece by many but a drowning accident soon thereafter meant that there was to be no more.

Quite a bit of JEFF BUCKLEY material has surfaced since this time, however the debates over whether this is right or not, continue.

That is the case with todays feature track too – it is considered simply a demo with virtually no embellishments. But when the track also features the voice of his then girlfriend, Elizabeth Fraser of UK’s Cocteau Twins, an adoring public cannot be denied.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke
