NHT157: PHILIP AABERG – Sentimental Walk

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

Regular listeners will know my love of the record label Windham Hill.

Established in the United States in the mid 1970’s, the label was particularly successful in the 80’s and 90’s with their focus on (predominantly) instrumental acoustic music.

My take on it is that you had to be somewhat of a prodigy on your chosen instrumental to be associated with Windham Hill.

In my opinion, Philip Aaberg and his piano playing certainly fits that description!

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT156: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE QUEEN – The Good, The Bad And The Queen

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

I enjoyed buying those UK music magazines’ which came with a bonus CD – I didn’t buy them just because of the CD, but it was a nice little extra and a possible way of stumbling on something unexpected.

Such as it was with The Good, The Bad and The Queen who I discovered on one of these CD’s.

I recognised the vocals of the ever-reliable Damon Albarn, but what attracted me to the song was its almost ramshackle appeal – literally, it sounded to me like pirates playing music in Shanty Town. There is no other song that I would describe that way, so to me its unique. See what you think!

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT155: JOAN ARMATRADING – Sometimes I Don’t

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

I prepare NEVER HEARD THAT shows in blocks so that I am in advance – this just gives me a couple of weeks buffer to keep on top of things.

When you do that sometimes things are a specific case of timing. On Australian TV this morning I happened to be in earshot when a live interview with UK artist Joan Armatrading was aired.

This was to do with her brand-new album Consequences which she released only a couple of weeks ago. An album where she has written all the songs and played all the instruments.

In a case of excellent timing, the show highlighting the super talent that is Joan Armatrading was scheduled for today!

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke
