NHT067: SANDII AND THE SUNSETZ – An Antenna

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

In the mid 1980s Japanese band SANDII AND THE SUNSETZ started to do very well. Tracks like Sticky Music saw them achieve strong commercial success in many lands.

Prior to that however, they had a close association with YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA and other musicians and influences who were slightly left of centre.

Their debut 1981 album HEAT SCALE is intriguing – certainly Japanese sounding, yet it is both curious and unique all at the same time.

See what you think of this track from the album – it is called An Antenna.

I hope that you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT066: SIGUR ROS – Saeglopur

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

There are many ways that we can stumble upon new music, some quite unexpected.

Music stores are sadly very rare these days, but over the years, I have had my ears prick up on occasions when I have gone in to have a browse and I hear the music playing in the store.

I miss the browse and I miss those unexpected introductions. This is how I discovered this band from Iceland called SIGUR ROS.

Some may answer the question in the Census regarding your religious beliefs with the words SIGUR ROS.

See what you think!

I hope that you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT065: ADRIAN BELEW – Naive Guitar

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

To call ADRIAN BELEW a gun-guitarist for hire is to do him a great disservice.

Since the late 70s he has been plying his trade with some of the very greats of music.

Take FRANK ZAPPA, DAVID BOWIE and TALKING HEADS to being with.

He also offered lead vocals into the mix for ROBERT FRIPPS KING CRIMSON for a number of years.

BELEW is also renowned for making the guitar sound very much not like a guitar. The great thing about this track, is that you get to hear both his guitar playing that sounds like a guitar and his playing that does not!

This is great stuff.

I hope that you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT064: NATALIE IMBRUGLIA – Leave Me Alone

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NATALIE IMBRUGLIA did things differently. She did not follow the same path as her soapie star contemporaries.

Her debut album LEFT OF MIDDLE was mammoth and spawned a series of very successful singles.

This was an impressive achievement made more so because she gained widespread appeal through a masterly ability to navigate that delicate fine line between commercial and alternative.

Very few have been able to do that. See what you think.

I hope that you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke
