I wanted to celebrate reaching 150 shows by relaxing my rules a bit and releasing three shows that highlight American alternative bands from the post-grunge 90’s who attained real success.

It perhaps comes across as quite offensive including The Beatles in a show called NEVER HEAD THAT.

There aren’t many things they didn’t achieve – whatever that may have been, I am sure it wasn’t very important.

But such is the way of things with music that even the most almighty have songs, or even albums that we might just miss – if for no other reason than life gets in the way!

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

Sometimes when a song has that lo-fi sound it can be easy to think that there is something lacking and switch off. It can be the case though, that if we keep listening, something much greater reveals itself.

New Zealand band THE CHILLS did that with me for today’s feature track.

The overall sound hid a complexity and appeal that wasn’t initially apparent.

Later recordings contained a much bigger sound but there is a particular charm with this one – see what you think.

I really like that style of electronic music that can be incorporated under the broad banner of ‘chill-out’.

Australian band WICKED BEAT SOUND SYSTEM liked to dabble in that genre.

For me today’s feature track is an excellent example of what chill out is all about – gentle, yet intricate rhythms, with a real focus on musical melody and evocative vocals.

Most people would be aware that there is an extraordinarily rich musical diversity throughout the world. However, even the most musically intrepid would struggle to say that they have been exposed even to a fraction of it.

That is why sometimes it is great to see western musicians working with musicians from other nations. They are able to use their high profiles to bring lessor known musical styles and musicians to a wider audience.

UK duo 1 GIANT LEAP did just that. And we are all the richer for it.

When two high profile artists join together after the closure of their artistically respected previous bands, surely nothing could go wrong?

In my opinion when ex-Bauhaus vocalist Pete Murphy joined with ex-Japan bassist Mick Karn to form DALIS CAR nothing did go wrong. The result of their union was highly original, wildly inventive and totally uncompromising.

It seems that I was in the minority with that opinion……. see what you think!

I first heard Swedish artist STINA NORDENSTAM after she supplied vocals for a band that I really liked.

I enjoyed what she contributed to the extent that I knew that I should explore further – in doing so, I came to realise that she was a unique talent in her own right.

I just love the dynamic layering of this amazing song as it unfolds in front of you.
