NHT142: XTC – Making Plans For Nigel

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

Highly inventive British band XTC paved out a uniquely original approach to their music.

Cleverly constructed commercial tracks were driven by super cool riffs, and they were not shy of throwing in a dose of humour on top.

Super stardom did allude them but they instilled a passionately faithful loyalty in their fan base.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT141: MIDNIGHT OIL – Short Memory

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

Australia’s MIDNIGHT OIL has achieved a lot in their time together.

Their recorded product, over a long period is very well respected, but it is their extraordinarily powerful live show which leaves many around the world speechless.

They are back on the live circuit right now, and although I haven’t had the chance to see them yet, I hear that they are just as amazing as ever.

Today’s feature track is a real live favourite of mine!

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT140: READYMADE – Cirkus

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

I was introduced to French musician Jean-Philippe Verdin, aka READYMADE FC, through hearing a remix he had done for one of my favourite artists.

I was thoroughly impressed by how different he made it to the original whilst at the same time maintaining its integrity.

It inspired me to look into him further. What was revealed was a super talented musician with a highly original approach to music.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT139: HIS NAME IS ALIVE – Her Eyes Were Huge Things

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

Established in the 1980’s, UK record label 4AD continues to be associated with the cutting edge of alternative music. A virtual roll call of the coolest bands around from over the years – have a look on the internet and you will be astounded by the list.

Here is one of their acts from the 90’s, American outfit HIS NAME IS ALIVE. This is from the bands highly experimental ‘cut and splice’ beginnings.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT138: RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS – Behind The Sun

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

US band RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS, have certainly amassed an impressive history since starting off in the early 80’s.

Todays feature track is an early one from the band.

It contains their trademark funkiness, but I think it might be where they channelled their inner plaintiveness for the first time.

Its gentleness and groove appealed to me the first time I heard it.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT137: TED MULRY: Julia

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

I have happily admitted in previous shows that I am just as susceptible to a nice pop song as the next person.

Back in the late 1960’s and early 70’s, Australia raised musician TED MULRY was releasing high class pop.

It was only a few years later that a very different TED MULRY fronted the hard rock band called TMG or the TED MULRY GANG.

Here is where it all began though and I only have good words to say about it!

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT136: BABYBIRD – You Will Always Love Me

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

When I first saw English band BABYBIRD on a video show, I was encouraged enough to wonder what some of their other songs would be like.

I didn’t follow through on that until I happened upon a CD of their album There’s Something Going On a few years later. I decided to buy it. In doing so and then listening to the album, I learnt two things.

1. This was a very strong album indeed. And 2. Main man and vocalist Stephen Jones is one messed up guy!

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT135: MACHINE GUN FELLATIO – Unsent Letter

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

Using humour in songs has often been a way of connecting with the audience and a vehicle to success. There are many examples.

Australian band MACHINE GUN FELLATIO took that a lot further than most, and where deliberately both humorous and controversial.

They certainly had musical skill though. With this track, I think they knew they were on to something special and it is a rare instance where they just let the song shine.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT134: FRIGHTENED RABBIT – Woodpile

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

One of things that I truly love about music is that you can literally stumble upon a great song at any point.

That happened for me with Scottish band FRIGHTENED RABBIT. I had the opportunity to have a quick listen to the radio and todays track is the one that was being played.

I was completely won over, instantly.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT133: LLOYD COLE AND THE COMMOTIONS – Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

Eighties UK band, LLOYD COLE AND THE COMMOTIONS, were a group whose debut album caused great excitement and gained much success.

Original, musical and literate, Rattlesnakes, launched them onto a welcoming and appreciative world.

Pressure inevitably followed that success – they realised that they should have taken a deep breath and planned their next steps but that didn’t happen. It was not much later that they disbanded.

I sense that many bands could possibly speak of similar things?

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.
