NHT116: STONE TEMPLE PILOTS – Press Play

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

This weeks feature track by US band STONE TEMPLE PILOTS is a short one – but it is an important one.

The lead song off their third album, it signified that this was a band that was seriously growing from their hard rock / grunge foundation and broadening their musical palette.

The rest of the album certainly confirmed that, showing them at their playful and inventive best.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT115: GOLDFRAPP – Deep Honey

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

I think that is must help when you have a few strings in your musical bow.

Todays feature duo, Goldfrapp, have that.

They can tip their hand to cabaret, to pure dance, and across ambient chill.

That gives the listener a nice plate where they can take it all or pick and choose.

I am most fond of their ambient works and I have chosen one of them today.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT114: ALEX DE GRASSI – Western

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

I think we all appreciate that being taught, coached or mentored from an early age gives us a great chance to become very, very good at our craft.

With associated hard work and persistence, we can become professional – a lucky few will even be deemed experts in their field.

Without question, todays feature artist, ALEX DE GRASSI is an expert at the guitar. To discover that he is self-taught is absolutely extraordinary.

I challenge you not to be impressed with this eloquent and expressive track from another Windham Hill artist!

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT113: URBAN DANCE SQUAD – Deeper Shade of Soul

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

I think it is pretty hard to resist a good groove.

It is the sort of music which gets into your head and gives you that nice euphoric feeling.

It can even make the non-dancers dance. I think that describes me a little bit.

But try not to dance (or gently move from side to side!) when you put this little number on from Dutch band URBAN DANCE SQUAD with the volume up!

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT112: DECKCHAIRS OVERBOARD – Shout

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

I first saw Australian band DECKCHAIRS OVERBOARD on a TV show when I was very young.

For me, they stood out from the other acts that were on the program and I really liked their particular take on the pop song.

Over the next year or so I stumbled on a couple more singles that they released and I liked them just as much.

I particularly enjoyed how they could swap vocalists and come out with a different sound.

And then they stopped. All too quickly. I am sure there is a story there, but regardless I have to say that I am happy that I got to hear some of their tracks as I was growing up.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT111: SAVAGES – You’re My Chocolate

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

I am not ashamed to say that I miss the browse – that opportunity to immerse yourself in a physical store, with no regard for time, looking through music, video or books, or even all three at once!

Its not quite the same today, although online, “suggested for you” has become a powerful marketing tool.

As cool as that is, I don’t tend to spend a lot of time following those suggestions.

Having said that, in the past ignoring the edict “don’t judge a book by its cover” has tended to serve me very well. So, when a “suggested for you” revealed the band name SAVAGES and the song title You’re My Chocolate – I knew I had to click!

Boy, I am glad I did!

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT110: AUTECHRE – Overand

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

I wasn’t aware of UK duo AUTECHRE until I saw that they had done a remix for one of my favourite artists.

Liking the sound that they had produced, I knew that I needed to keep an eye out for them.

For some reason a number of years passed before I made that happen.

What I found was a really interesting act who had released a lot of recordings and had no fear of metamorphizing from release to release.

Here is one from their ambient period.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT109: MEN AT WORK – It’s A Mistake

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

It must be an incredible feeling when your debut album tops the charts all around the world. You can imagine that it would have to be both a very happy and very surreal sensation.

In fact, it is hard to think of anything negative that might come from such an outcome. Perhaps one of the few things is that it might overshadow what comes next.

This is perhaps true of Australia band MEN AT WORK. Their debut album Business As Usual was enormous. So enormous that their second album was already complete whilst the debut was still high in the charts.

Second album, Cargo, wasn’t as big as Business As Usual, but maybe that was because the world was simply not yet ready to move on. Today’s track, I think, is a reminder of how good that second album is.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT108: AIR – Alone In Kyoto

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

When French duo AIR released their debut album Moon Safari in 1998, it is as though the world was waiting for their particular take on ambient electronica.

The album and the three singles lifted from it were all massively successful and a long, prosperous and respected musical career was to be theirs.

They also formed a special relationship with Academy Aware winning director, producer and screen-writer Sophia Coppola, writing the soundtrack or contributing songs to a number of her films.

Todays track is from one of those movies, 2003’s Lost in Translation.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT107: SHELLEYAN ORPHAN – Timeblind

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

When I first heard UK band SHELLEYAN ORPHAN and their 1989 single Shatter, I was thoroughly impressed.

They struck me as a highly musical band that was augmented by complex and emotive vocal melodies.

In a way, they seemed to me to be a modern-day representation of baroque period England. Unique. Fascinating!

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.
