NHT161: JAH WOBBLE – Angels

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

UK artist JAH WOBBLE has done a lot.

As a bass player, he played with a distinctive and unique style that saw him sought after by fellow musicians.

He was there early on with that flourish of punk and post-punk music.

He later settled into his own big productions which came with a real world music flavour, such as with today’s feature track.

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT160: MUTED featuring Jófríður Ákadóttir – A Peaceful Sleep

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

This week we are continuing the theme of artists who are excellent, but information about them on the internet is very hard to come by.

The skill of Icelandic musician MUTED is such that you think there would be a great deal more out there about him. But no.

He has vocalist Jófríður Ákadóttir join him on this track and the two put on a tremendous trip-hop tinged performance of beauty.

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT159: DAVID CARON – A Quiet Passing

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

There are many examples through all walks of life where super talented people don’t necessarily seek or receive the accolades that they deserve.

Today’s feature artist, David Caron, is one of those.

His ambient music is evocative, powerful, and worthy of celebration, yet it is hard to find any details about him.

I don’t know why.

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT158: SONIC YOUTH – Tom Violence

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

US band SONIC YOUTH has achieved incredible things.

They effectively pioneered their own style of music and casually moved from the underground to the mainstream without sacrificing their principles. Impressive stuff!

I believe that I have selected a track which sees them at their most accessible – but as is the case for any SONIC YOUTH track, be prepared for the curveball!

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT157: PHILIP AABERG – Sentimental Walk

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

Regular listeners will know my love of the record label Windham Hill.

Established in the United States in the mid 1970’s, the label was particularly successful in the 80’s and 90’s with their focus on (predominantly) instrumental acoustic music.

My take on it is that you had to be somewhat of a prodigy on your chosen instrumental to be associated with Windham Hill.

In my opinion, Philip Aaberg and his piano playing certainly fits that description!

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT156: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE QUEEN – The Good, The Bad And The Queen

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

I enjoyed buying those UK music magazines’ which came with a bonus CD – I didn’t buy them just because of the CD, but it was a nice little extra and a possible way of stumbling on something unexpected.

Such as it was with The Good, The Bad and The Queen who I discovered on one of these CD’s.

I recognised the vocals of the ever-reliable Damon Albarn, but what attracted me to the song was its almost ramshackle appeal – literally, it sounded to me like pirates playing music in Shanty Town. There is no other song that I would describe that way, so to me its unique. See what you think!

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT155: JOAN ARMATRADING – Sometimes I Don’t

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

I prepare NEVER HEARD THAT shows in blocks so that I am in advance – this just gives me a couple of weeks buffer to keep on top of things.

When you do that sometimes things are a specific case of timing. On Australian TV this morning I happened to be in earshot when a live interview with UK artist Joan Armatrading was aired.

This was to do with her brand-new album Consequences which she released only a couple of weeks ago. An album where she has written all the songs and played all the instruments.

In a case of excellent timing, the show highlighting the super talent that is Joan Armatrading was scheduled for today!

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT154: MALCOLM MCLAREN – Madame Butterfly

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

It is hard to know how best to introduce today’s feature artist, Malcolm McLaren, as he embraced so many different artistic pursuits.

In fact he did so much that it is sometimes easy to overlook his impressive catalogue of music production.

Here is just a taste!

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT!

NHT153: FILTER – Take A Picture

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

I wanted to celebrate reaching 150 shows by relaxing my rules a bit and releasing three shows that highlight American alternative bands from the post-grunge 90’s who attained real success.

Show 3 of 3 highlights FILTER, a band who turned it down from 11 just for a moment with their track Take A Picture and reaped the rewards.

I hope you enjoy NEVER HEARD THAT!
