NHT130: YES – We Have Heaven

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

UK band YES has taken many different forms over a very long period of time. Starting out in 1968, incredibly, there is a version of the band that is still playing live to big crowds.

I was introduced to them at a young age and found that there was something special that I connected with.

Their astonishing musicianship was such that they could play music a bit to complex and busy for my palette, but when they slowed things down and presented their emotive side, they would carry me away to a truly happy place.

Many of my favourite YES songs are the ones that go for 20 plus minutes but here is a rare short one. This one is predominantly vocals but I found it very haunting and memorable from the very first time I heard it.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT129: THE PAPER KITES – Young

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

It can be fascinating when you discover that a song you really like is sung by a band where English is their second language. If you don’t become aware of that through other means you may never pick that up just by listening to the song.

Sometimes that can be the case musically too – like a particular sound that permeates through the song that makes you think that the band or artist must come from a certain country.

I have to admit that with today’s artist, THE PAPER KITES, all my assumptions were wrong and I was really surprised to find that they originate from Australia!

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT128: THE TEA PARTY – Save Me

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

Canada’s, THE TEA PARTY were a musically talented trio.

Although they had an emotive side, they knew how to write ‘big’ songs – this made them a live favourite of many.

Today’s track is one of their early ones, but it is a really good indicator of the bands style – grand, sweeping, epic!

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT127: THE GO-BETWEENS – Cattle And Cane

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

Australian band THE GO-BETWEENS seemed to live the artsy bohemian musical life.

Starting as a slightly left of centre band, with early dalliances in the UK and Europe, and signing with a cool record label, they remained slightly left of centre throughout their time together.

Perhaps they wanted more, but it is fair to say that through this period they released some welcoming and unique tracks.

I know this one hooked me the first time I heard it.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT126: BABY METAL – Karate

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

Today’s feature track, Karate by Japanese band BABY METAL is ferocious stuff.

I was completely unprepared when I heard it for the first time on radio.

Thinking I was going to be getting something quite different, what followed was without doubt one of the heaviest songs that I have ever heard. But sophisticated too.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke
