NHT120: THE SMASHING PUMPKINS – Daydream

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

US band, THE SMASHING PUMPKINS rode the musical high life for quite some time.

Initially identified with the grunge movement, they very soon transcended into mainstream consciousness.

I think that their willingness to explore beyond “guitar, bass and drums”, the grunge standard of many of their contemporaries, helped them to achieve this.

Today’s track is another short one, but what attracted me to it, is that it is led by acoustic guitar and is embellished by a string section. Not very grungy!

Oh, and for interest, it is the only song on debut album Gish not sung by Billy Corgan.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT119: THE CLASH – One More Dub

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

THE CLASH are another band who completely transformed musically.

Recognised as a premier group of the UK’s punk scene in the mid to late 70’s, they soon threw the punk shackles away, or more accurately turned them to dust.

A few short years later in 1980, the were able to write and record the triple album Sandinista – an album of extraordinary diversity.

Not surprisingly, opinion of the album is polarised. Me? I wasn’t sure which song to choose!

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

NHT118: JAPAN – A Foreign Place

Hi,

Welcome to NEVER HEARD THAT.

There is no doubt that bands which achieve some longevity will develop their sound. There are a few however, which go through a metamorphosis.

This is the case for UK band JAPAN. Starting out as teenagers with a glam-funk style, they very soon crystallised into presenting sophisticated art rock.

Their final album, 1981’s opus Tin Drum, with its uniquely oriental stylings and its otherworldly single Ghosts saw them move to the verge of super stardom – then they called it quits.

Todays feature track, written a couple of years before that album was perhaps a signifier of where they were headed musically.

I hope you enjoy this weeks NEVER HEARD THAT.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke
