NHT041 : MOGWAI – Ex Cowboy

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks “Never Heard That”.

Scottish band Mogwai are far removed from last week’s classical music. Guitar, bass, keyboards and drums are their choice of instruments.

They do however, use the concept of ‘layering’ very impressively in their music.

All sorts of musical motifs are added and subtracted over the course of one of their songs – they move from gentle and fragile to huge and loud. And across their ebbs and flows nary a vocal is heard!

I hope that you enjoy this weeks “Never Heard That.

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT040: BARRINGTON PHELOUNG – Sisters

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks “Never Heard That”.

There are few things more powerful in the human world than a skilled orchestra in the hands of a skilled conductor, playing a skilfully composed musical score.

Classical music has indeed been with us for a long time – perhaps it is easiest to think of names like Mozart and Beethoven but there are very gifted modern composers who continue the tradition of these grand masters.

I think Barrington Pheloung is one of them. And I think classical musical will be with us for a long time yet!

See what you think!

Cheers, Andrew Muecke

NHT039: JON HASSELL – Last Night The Moon Came

Hi,

Welcome to this weeks “Never Heard That”.

Jon Hassell, a composer and trumpeter, started playing music in the 1960’s. His last album was released in 2018.

In between he has pioneered music styles – ‘fourth world music’ is what he called the fusing of advanced electronic instrumentation with world music.

Somehow falling just outside the range of the ‘popular’ music radar, Jon Hassell is however the definition of a musicians’ musician.

I hope that you enjoy this weeks “Never Heard That”.
